Professional Teacher Certification in Saskatchewan
Teacher Accreditation
In Saskatchewan, the Saskatchewan Professional Teachers Regulatory Board (SPTRB) regulates the certification of qualified teachers under The Education Act, 1995. The Board is also responsible for :
- Developing policies, qualification requirements and certification processes for professional teachers and early childhood educators;
- Assessing the qualifications of teachers and early childhood educators;
- Issuing professional certificates to teachers and early childhood educators;
- Maintaining a provincial registry of certified teachers and early childhood educators;
- Administering teacher accreditation; and,
- Working with school divisions to determine teachers’ salary classifications.
Probationary Certificates
A Temporary Teaching Permit may be issued in emergency circumstances through a process guided by the following steps:
- Human Resources staff should make every reasonable effort to recruit teachers who hold a Saskatchewan Professional Teaching Certificate: Professional A, Professional B, or Vocational/Technical.
- A reasonable recruitment effort includes publicly advertising teaching vacancies through widely circulated media and other appropriate recruitment channels.
- If these efforts are unsuccessful and a qualified candidate cannot be recruited within the required timeframe, the CEO/Director of Education or designate may initiate the process of obtaining a Temporary Teaching Permit on behalf of an individual who does not hold a Saskatchewan teaching certificate.
- A Temporary Teaching Permit is valid only for the school year for which it is issued and authorizes the holder to perform only the duties specified in the permit.
- Candidates eligible to apply for a Temporary Teaching Permit must be high school graduates and must have been out of school for at least four years.
- Candidates must have completed post-secondary studies or possess specialized skills or expertise, such as proficiency in a specific language.
- Temporary Teaching Permits are considered only in exceptional circumstances, such as when efforts to recruit qualified and competent teaching staff have been unsuccessful, or in the case of mature individuals who have not completed their secondary education.
- The process is initiated by the CEO/Director of Education or designate only when justified by operational needs and always in collaboration with the Saskatchewan Professional Teachers Regulatory Board (SPTRB).
- The CEO/Director of Education, or their designate, must gather all required documentation from the applicant and submit the complete application package to the SPTRB.
- Incomplete applications may significantly delay the certification process.
- Applications must be submitted by the school division and not by the applicant.
